Gastric Bypass surgery helps you lose weight by changing the way your stomach handles the food you eat. The surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass the small intestine. The qualifications to have the surgery have become more strict due to the rise in obese people. You must have been over weight for at least five years,  Attempted to lose weight,You must be a motivated person and wanting to lose weight, You must be 65 years or younger, and your BMI must be 40 or greater.
Dr. Edward Eaton Mason"father of obesity surgery" created gastric bypass in 1965 and by 1980. Mason began preforming Gastric Bypass surgery in 1966. The most common form of Gastric is Roux-en-Y gastric where the stomach is reduced to a small pouch the "new" stomach holds about one ounce of food. Even though Roux-en-Y surgery helps in substantial weight loss their are some problems with the way your stomach absorbs nutrients that you need. So Dr. Mason created a surgery called Vertical banded gastroplasty which he began preforming in 1980. This surgery reduces the region of the stomach that receives food, but it does not change the way the rest of your stomach handles food. Doctors preform other surgerys such as Exstensive Gastric Bypass(biliopancreatic diversion) this is said to be the most complicated surgery. In the exstensive surgery they remove the whole lower part of your stomach.  This procedure helps you lose weight but is not reccomended because of the high nutritional deficiencys. Doctors are reaserching other ways to go about preforming the surgery with less complications.
